Asyla is a soul artist, born to be an artistic painter. At a young age she started to paint every interesting thing she saw in her neighborhood. So she soon got the nickname ‘E Mucha ku ta Pinta’, the Child that Paints. Her talent was first noticed when at a young age, she sketched in a fluent way the Baroque-style Altagracia Church in front of her house. But her real interest in art started in the late seventies, when she left to Holland for studies. During this period Asyla was very busy with modeling, vocal techniques, studying languages and finally Art Studies in 1979, when she painted her first real paintings.

Many years have passed now and being a soul artist and addicted to her art, Asyla has been experimenting  the last 30 years with a diversity of techniques,  such as Silk-screen, acryl, shabloning, old-style sketches and prints, pen, ink and chalk. She has also worked in just as many places, such as St. Maarten, Barbados, Bonaire, Curacao, Holland and for a while also in Germany. Furthermore, she has been doing solo-shows at banks, hotels, trade centers, museums and art galleries on all these Islands, including Holland and Germany. Following her urge for perfection she visited several art schools in Holland and the States with a halt at the Dutch University for Conceptual Art (1999-2000). Within this framework, she has developed a big interest in discussing with artists active on different fields, while her never ending love for art in general has driven her to give painting lessons to the youth, to write art columns in newspapers and create poems. The last years however, perfection became less important for her, making place for a more imaginational and intuitional orientated artistic attitude.

Today, time has faded away her nickname ‘The Child that Paints’, but deep in her soul Asyla still carries with her that little enthusiastic, determined and art loving child that has helped her take so many difficult hurdles during a 30 years artistic journey.
